So you know, what I like about this book is that is it an accessible text that talks in some smart ways about the practice of writing.<\/p>\n<p>Some things you liked<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the chapters that focused on action in sentences<\/li>\n<li>pathological empathy chapter<\/li>\n<li>criticism of the five-paragraph essay<\/li>\n<li>writing GPS<\/li>\n<li>tell how to change the world<\/li>\n<li>ugly first drafts<\/li>\n<li>editing is more important than writing<\/li>\n<li>story rules<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some things you didn&#8217;t<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>book highlighted that you have to practice writing everyday to get good at it<\/li>\n<li>humor chapter<\/li>\n<li>the obvious points about what makes a good story<\/li>\n<li>when she called writing &#8220;a habit, not an art&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>5-paragraph essay (it does still have a place)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe more you think about what you want to say, and plan for it, the easier it is to say\u201d<\/li>\n<li>exhaustive list of advice in section 1<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some things that made you think<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>misplaced modifiers<\/li>\n<li>comparing writing to math<\/li>\n<li>put the important stuff at the beginning<\/li>\n<li>changing the world with your story<\/li>\n<li>advice #4 (regard publishing as a privilege) and #28 (deadlines are the WD-40 of writing)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMake truth the cornerstone of anything you create.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wanted to share with you the summary of what you liked, what you didn&#8217;t, and what surprised you from the Handley reading.
