Web Writing Rules

Working in the groups for the revision project, students generated a top ten list for web writing. Following are the “rules” that overlapped between the groups or were particularly important that they included.

1. Inverted pyramid, important things on top
2. Organize layout for scanning
   • Use headers
   • Incorporate white space
   • Chunk paragraphs

3. Language considerations

• Audience driven tone and voice
• Clear, concise
• active voice
•   “simple” vocabulary
•  no jargon
• engaging with a purpose

4. Use visuals if needed and have purpose

5. Consider accessibility

6. Remember to be empathetic
