New to teaching TPC courses?

Maybe you’re looking for a way to differentiate this course from freshman composition or other English courses your students have taken in the past? One fun way to do this on the first day of class is to simply ask students to respond to the prompt “why do you hate English classes?” You’ll find that their concerns (like the weekly reading quizzes on a novel they could barely stay awake through) simply don’t apply to the goals of your course. This activity is a nice way to break the ice, introduce course objectives and expectations, and help your students understand just how useful a TPC course can be for their future.
